Oshawa was built in the cast iron era — and the clock has run out
Oshawa is an old GM town. The subdivisions that went up for autoworker families in the postwar boom — block after block between Ritson, Simcoe and King — were plumbed the only way anyone plumbed in that era: a vertical cast iron soil stack running from below the basement floor to the vent above the roof, with cast iron and galvanized branch lines feeding it, and a buried cast iron or vitrified clay sewer lateral carrying everything out to the street. Census data puts Oshawa at roughly 66,600 occupied dwellings, with about 39% of the stock built before 1970 — one of the older housing profiles in the GTA. By our estimate that leaves on the order of 14,000 Oshawa-area houses of the cast iron era, and several thousand still on their original stacks today.
Here is the problem with that math. Cast iron drain pipe is commonly credited with a 50–75 year service life. A stack installed in 1958 is pushing 70. One installed in 1972 just crossed 50. The whole cohort is aging out at once — which is why "cast iron" now shows up in Durham home-inspection reports, insurance questionnaires and real-estate conditions the way knob-and-tube wiring did a decade ago.

Cast iron was the standard — durable, quiet, fireproof. Nobody expected the house to outlive the pipe by decades, but that's exactly what happened.

Years 20–40
Corrosion works from the inside out
Hydrogen sulphide gas from sewage attacks the crown of horizontal pipe; flowing water scours the belly. Rust scale builds up inside, narrowing a 4-inch pipe to 2 inches or less. From the outside, everything still looks solid.

Years 40–60
The symptoms start
Slow drains in more than one fixture. A sewer smell in the basement. Orange flakes and black sediment in the tub. Snaking helps for shorter and shorter stretches, because the problem isn't a clog — it's the pipe itself.

Years 55–75 — today
Failure, or a planned replacement
Pinhole leaks, a cracked hub, a collapsed section under the basement slab — or, for the owner who moved first, a scheduled re-pipe done on their own timeline at a quoted price. Every original stack in Oshawa is somewhere on this line right now.
The economics reward the owner who moves early. Replace, line, or spot-repair — the honest decision tree
Not every cast iron problem is a full re-pipe, and a good contractor doesn't pretend otherwise. The decision runs on what the camera sees:
- Spot repair — one bad section in an otherwise serviceable run: cut out the failed length, splice in new pipe with shielded couplings. Cheapest, fastest, and legitimate when the rest of the pipe still has wall thickness left.
- Full stack or full-house replacement — the pipe is uniformly thin, scaled or leaking in multiple places. Replacing it all in ABS/PVC resets the clock on the whole system and ends the whack-a-mole. This is the default answer for original 1950s–60s installations.

What settles it is evidence, not a sales pitch: a camera run through the stack and lateral, wall thickness and scale documented, and a written quote against what the camera actually found.
